Where river, sand and simplicity meet.
Caraíva has no cars, no tarmac and, until not long ago, no electricity at night. The streets are sand, you cross the river by canoe to get there, and your suitcase travels by wheelbarrow. None of that is an inconvenience: it is the reason people come back.
The village is small and you can walk all of it in twenty minutes. The river Caraíva on one side, the open sea on the other. At night forró pé de serra plays in the bars along the main street, and Praia do Satu is a walk away up the sand.
Worth knowing beforehand: mobile signal is weak, some places take cash only and the power flickers now and then. People come to Caraíva for that, not in spite of it.
Getting there. About 1h30 from Porto Seguro on a dirt road, plus the river crossing by canoe. Cars stay on the other bank.
