Far south of Bahia
Holiday homes in Trancoso
Charm between the sea and the Quadrado.
Trancoso turns around the Quadrado: a long stretch of grass with colourful houses down both sides, the little white church of 1656 at the far end and the sea below, down the slope. By day it is mango-tree shade and children playing football. At night the tables come out onto the grass and the place becomes something else.
The beaches are below the Quadrado, down the hill or along the road: Nativos, Coqueiros, Rio da Barra. It is the best-served village in the far south, with a market, a pharmacy, good restaurants and mobile signal that actually works — which counts for a lot if you are coming here to work.
In December and January Trancoso fills up and prices climb. From March to November it is another village: calmer, and a good deal cheaper.
Getting there. About 40 minutes by car from Porto Seguro airport, taking the ferry across to Arraial d'Ajuda.
