Far south of Bahia
Holiday homes in Caravelas
Between the ocean and the archipelago.
Caravelas is an old town, founded in the seventeenth century on the riverbank among mangroves and colonial houses. This is where the boats leave for the Abrolhos marine national park — and that is what defines the place: a town facing the open ocean and the archipelago.
Between July and November humpback whales fill the channel, and Caravelas is one of the best places in Brazil to see them. The beaches are at Barra, ten minutes from the centre, with kiosks and a gentle sea.
The town has proper amenities: market, pharmacy, bank, bus station. It is the far south of the far south, and whoever comes discovers that the distance is exactly what keeps it preserved.
Getting there. About 4h from Porto Seguro on the BR-101, or 1h15 from Teixeira de Freitas — the nearest airport with scheduled flights.
